Francks Francois Deceus Biography
Francks Francois Deceus continues to emerge as one of the important young
painters of his generation. He has devoted his career to creating deeply
expressive bodies of work that pay tribute to the quiet courage of
“everyday people”, and that express deeply felt social
concerns.
His work incorporates many of the influences and aesthetic forms of the
40’s and 50’s visual artists like William Johnson and Jacob
Lawrence, as well as some of the artistic traditions of his native Haiti.
His modernist style relies heavily on a simplification of forms, sharp
angles, bold color contrasts, distortion of perspectives, and the use of
surface tension with the use of overlaying material and raised written
messages. He frequently uses the symbolism of hands and flowers in his
paintings to represent hard work and strength, and to pay tribute to
those who came before him.
The artist has had a number of solo and group exhibitions and has
garnered significant awards and honors. Among
his achievements is the permanent display of one of his pieces, “Blue
Man” at the Schomburg Center in New
York City. His work was also featured in scenes
in two major motion pictures in 2000. Recently, three paintings by the
artist were selected for the International Review of African American
Art’s “Juried
Exhibition in Print”. Declared “outstanding” by a panel
of scholars and critics, the paintings were featured in the February 2001
issue of the publication.
Deceus was born in Haiti
and currently resides in Brooklyn,
New York. He is a graduate
of Long Island
University and
studied printmaking at the venerated Robert Blackburn Printmaking
Workshop.
On PILGRIMAGE FROM SCATTERED
POINTS
I have always been
interested in events and issues that effect large groups of people
simultaneously. The paintings in this body of work are austere and
hopeful in equal measure. It’s a sort of conceptual portrait of all
of us as we seek understanding in a world of contingencies. |
