Keba
Konte Biography
Konte’s works refer directly to humanity - the body
and community - particularly the fragile state of urban living.
He layers memory and metaphor as he inscribes social conditions,
emphasizing love, vulnerability, decay and loss. A passage
written by Keba in his artist’s statement elucidates
his connections:
“If I had to describe my work in three words, I would
say ‘social, beautiful and pure’. There is beauty
in even the most ordinary act. I want people who see my work
to know it’s true, it’s sincere and it’s
coming from my heart.”
Konte began making photographs in his native town of San Francisco
when he was fourteen. His interest in photography was prompted
by the gift of a camera from his mother, also a photographer.
This gift inspired the young photographer to take pictures
of the familiar. In his current work, he expands familiar
references by printing his images on unconventional surfaces.
Konte calls this process “photomontage on wood.”
His images show how Konte’s interest in subtle gesture
gives form and shape to his work. He writes:
“Once the spirit of the wood with its knots and grain
merges with the human image, there is a consciousness speaking
from each image that often transcends the original context,
and I become an alchemist.”
Konte’s work memorializes a moment. He uses found objects,
specifically wood, and re-contextualizes the object with photographic
imagery. By superimposing and juxtaposing images from a variety
of sources, he extends the meaning and message in his work.
He composes, manipulates, and interrogates social conditions.
Konte is a mixed-media artist who weaves stories through the
photographic process. His work decodes and conveys messages
about life experiences, as he imposes and also allows the
viewer to imagine the story behind the work of art. Konte’s
work is about memory - collective, personal, and community. |
